Comfrey (Symphytum officinale)

Comfrey is a herb successfully used in herbal medicine. Concerning weight gain and weight gain effects, comfrey is recommended for regulating blood sugar levels.


There are various diseases treated by comfrey. Comfrey leaves are used in herbal medicine: with comfrey leaves can be made compresses applied on the paralyzed areas from luxation and sprain. Roots comfrey are used in preparing tea, which is an excellent remedy for treating bronchitis and digestive disorders.


Comfrey has a healing action (if it is used as baths for burns, wounds and hemorrhoids). 


Confrey  ameliorate pain after amputations. Gastric ulcer is healed with the active substances contained in comfrey.


For external use, comfrey is uaed for treating various diseases: complete baths, especially for


  • rheumatism, 

  • arthritis, 

  • bone pain, 

  • discopathies, 

  • legs blood circulation disorders,

  • varicose veins.

Comfrey tea, which is beneficial in treating:

  • hyper-acidity gastritis,
  • gastric and duodenal ulcer,
  • internal bleeding,
  • bronchitis, 
  • enteritis,
  • diarrhea.

This comfrey tea must be made from two tablespoons of comfrey roots, simmered for half an hour. This tea is also recommended to be used as gargle to treat pharyngitis, laryngitis, and sore throat.


Wounds, burns, rheumatism, gout, arthritis can be treated with complete bath from a mixture of 500 g of fresh comfrey leaves, macerated overnight in 5-7 liters of cold water. The next day macerate must begin to boil, then the mixture must be added in the bath water. It is recommended that the bath to last about 20 minutes.


Lung diseases can be cured using the therapeutic properties of this plant. Thus, wine comfrey is indispensable to treat these diseases. Wine is made from 2-3 fresh comfrey root, left for 5-6 weeks in a liter of natural white wine.


Comfrey tincture prepared also from comfrey roots is useful in healing:

  • hematoma

  • contusions

  • arthritis

  • joint degeneration
